Rory Hunter, the trainer, has made a strategic decision to ease Autumn Mystery into his autumn campaign. Despite his impressive wins in the VRC Derby Preview and Group 3 Sportsbet Classic, Hunter has opted for a more relaxed start, choosing a Benchmark 84 race at Caulfield over a stakes grade event.

Hunter commented, "It's a good field with plenty of speed, which makes it a nice assignment for him. We could have gone straight into a Group race, but we wanted to give him a softer option and see how he handles it."
And this is the part most people miss... Autumn Mystery's main goal is the G1 South Australian Derby in May, and Hunter has a clear plan to get him there. He aims to have the horse race four or five times before the Derby, with the Alister Clark Stakes and Easter Cup as potential stepping stones.
During a recent jumpout, Autumn Mystery showed his potential, making up ground late despite being outpaced by some sharper rivals. Hunter was particularly impressed with the horse's smart getaway, a positive sign for a horse that often finds himself at the rear of the field.
A good barrier draw would be ideal, but Hunter is confident that Autumn Mystery's improvements will see him perform well regardless.
Michael Dee, who rode him in the jumpout, will be in the saddle on Saturday.
Hunter added, "He jumped well in his trial and showed good pace. We're excited to see him in action. He's going great, and a final hitout on Tuesday will prepare him perfectly for Saturday's race."
