From Novice to National Champion: A Cyclist's Inspiring Journey

In 2023, a decision was made to transform a life. It wasn't a rock-bottom moment, but amidst the chaos of emergency nursing, shift work, and a deteriorating relationship, mental and physical health were suffering. The time had come for a change.
After numerous failed gym attempts, an indoor cycling gym offered a fresh start. With a manageable goal of three weekly visits, the journey began. ADHD's competitive nature became an ally, and a newfound passion emerged.
The next step was a second-hand road bike, despite having no cycling knowledge. That first ride was a humbling experience, with a quick stop at 99 Bikes for gear ending in a fall and torn lycra. But resilience prevailed.
Here's where the story takes an unexpected turn.
The transition phase brought challenges: relationships, values, and goals evolved. The question arose: "Am I a cyclist yet?" Imposter syndrome loomed, but the cycling community's generosity and openness proved transformative.
The Bowral Classic, a 150km race with significant elevation gain, became the target. Despite doubts, the author signed up, and crossing that finish line brought overwhelming pride and tears. Not only had they completed an ambitious goal, but they also placed second among females, a powerful affirmation of belonging.
Fast forward to September 2025, and the Australian National Championships crowned the author as the MAS1 Road Race National Champion.
Cycling's impact extended beyond physical health. It reshaped outlook, self-worth, mindset, and resilience. It introduced a diverse community, opened doors to incredible opportunities, and boosted confidence.
