The Big Reveal: Ryder Cup-Inspired Rooms
Dromoland Castle Resort, nestled in the heart of County Clare, has been given the go-ahead to add a whopping 25 new guest rooms, inspired by the prestigious 2027 Ryder Cup. This expansion is expected to bring in millions of euros in annual revenue, solidifying the resort's position as a leading luxury destination in Ireland.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Clare County Council has granted permission for the second phase of this expansion, which includes a four-storey extension, adding 17 new rooms and losing 5 existing ones. This net gain of 12 bedrooms is just the beginning of an extensive upgrade plan.
The permission also includes the construction of a new restaurant, and here's a fun fact: it follows an earlier approval for the renovation of stables into 13 additional guest rooms!
Currently boasting 96 guest rooms, this expansion will increase the resort's capacity by a significant 26%. But that's not all - the two-phase plan also includes some unique additions like a cellar speakeasy bar, lakeside sauna cabins, a wet spa facility, and even a new home for the protected Lesser Horseshoe Bat.
With an average nightly room revenue of €650, the new accommodation has the potential to generate almost €6 million per year in room revenues alone.
And this is the part most people miss... The 2027 Ryder Cup, hosted at the nearby Adare Manor, is the driving force behind this expansion. In a planning report, Tom Phillips + Associates state that Dromoland Castle's proximity to Adare positions it perfectly to welcome visitors and showcase County Clare on the international stage.
Lizzie Donnelly, Associate Director at Tom Phillips, emphasizes that the proposed improvements will enhance the resort's economic and social impact on the region. She adds that the development has been carefully designed to minimize any adverse effects on the built heritage, environment, and transport infrastructure.
Mark McSorley, the Resort General Manager, expressed his excitement about the planning permission for the second phase. He sees this as a crucial step in maintaining Dromoland Castle's reputation as a leading luxury hospitality destination in Ireland.
