Breaking News: A Dramatic Turn in the Haas Situation as Broncos Confront New Competition from an NRL Rival
In an unexpected development, Payne Haas is set to sign a one-year contract extension upon his return from the Broncos’ World Club Challenge overseas trip. But here’s where it gets controversial: while the Broncos are securing Haas for another year, there are fresh concerns brewing. Reports suggest that Haas is considering a move to the newly established 19th NRL franchise, the Papua New Guinea Chiefs.
According to information from Code Sports, the management team of the Broncos is planning to meet with Haas to finalize this new extension, which would ensure his stay until the conclusion of the 2027 season. However, the entry of the PNG Chiefs into the competition in 2028 could pose a significant threat to the Broncos’ hopes of retaining Haas.
Initially, Haas was being actively pursued by the rebel rugby league competition known as R360, with talks of a lucrative offer that would entice him to switch codes. Nevertheless, because the start date for R360 has been postponed until 2028, the PNG Chiefs might have a chance to lure Haas away from the Broncos’ camp.
Despite all this attention from rival leagues, it's reported that Haas has a strong preference for remaining in the NRL, making a switch to R360 seem unlikely at this stage. The chairman of the Brisbane Broncos, Karl Morris, is keen to gain clarity on Haas’ future intentions. There are also claims that Haas’ management has negotiated a twelve-month extension to keep his options flexible, enabling him to command substantial contracts when he hits the open market.
While the Broncos were open to signing Haas for a longer three-year deal, he reportedly turned it down. One of the compelling advantages for the PNG Chiefs is their ability to offer tax-free salaries, along with a generous salary cap of $12 million to attract top talent.
As the situation unfolds, Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy acknowledged that the potential for recruitment bids from the PNG franchise poses a more serious threat than those from R360. "If we’re being honest, Perth and PNG will present a greater challenge than anything coming from R360," he stated. "The main hurdle lies within the salary cap constraints. In the end, we have limited resources that must be divided among a talented roster of players, which may lead to tough decisions in the future. While that is always challenging, our goal remains to invest in ways that make our club a desirable destination for players, ensuring they want to join us and continue their careers here."
